Being a French intern in Toba is amazing, but today was truly special: I was assigned to assist with the famous Ama Tour. For context, Ama are incredible Japanese women who dive deep into the ocean without oxygen tanks to harvest seafood.
And then there’s me: a guy who gets brain freeze just drinking iced coffee.
My day started near an Ama hut as we waited for our guests. Before I could offer them a warm French welcome, the staff briefed me on the itinerary for the day.
And then, we were off! First, we visited a museum to learn more about the Ama traditions.
Seeing the heavy weights they use to sink into the deep, intimidating sea made me realize just how strong these women are.
Next, we visited the youngest Ama diver in her charming shop, where I discovered that their talents go far beyond diving they also make beautiful handmade crafts.
Finally, it was time to eat! As a French person, when you tell me we’re going somewhere to eat fresh seafood cooked over an open fire, my stomach instantly starts playing the accordion in celebration.
We walked over to meet the Ama divers themselves.
These women are absolute legends. Most of them are in their 60s, 70s, or even 80s, yet they have better cardio than I’ll ever have in my entire life.
When the food was served, I inspected it with the precision of Remy from Ratatouille.
I took a bite of the fish and wow. It was hands-down the best fish I have ever tasted.
Beyond the incredible food, the atmosphere inside the Ama hut was unforgettable, filled with warmth, laughter of Ama women, and the rich scent of burning charcoal.
